From these experiences came Dickens’ literary strong points, a sense of irony, an indelible wit, and a keen sense of observation about the overindulgences of the rich and the horrors of contemporary labor. Dickens, who was born in the middle class, wrote about the average person of his era in a way that connected him to his readers unlike any other writer of his time.
Tomalin also paints a dreary picture of Dickens not told before, a man with many aspects, some wondrous and some terrifying. Dickens was a sullen, obsessive and self-indulgent man who often betrayed friends, mocked others and nurtured petty grudges.
Sadly, Tomalin reveals Dickens as a contradiction of personalities. He was not a good father or family man. He had mistresses yet worked to get prostitutes off of the street. His daughter hated him while American audiences loved him when he toured the U.S.

When they arrived at the Griffin Lane home, Tice went inside while Green waited outside. While Tice and McGraw were inside, Weber entered the home from a rear door carrying a gun and demanded that Tice give him all of her money, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“She ran out of the house, because he went in with a shotgun, and reported it to us,” Yoes said.
Tice’s cell phone was taken during the robbery but has been recovered, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators were originally lead to believe that McGraw had solicited Tice for sex, but that he had no knowledge of the robbery. They booked him with the additional charge on Tuesday after learning he had also been involved in the planning and execution of the robbery, Yoes said.
The two men located Tice through an escort service via the Internet, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

… We’re about two years overdue,” Bradley said.
Bradley said that he would like to open shelters in Atlanta, Miami and Orange County, Calif. The St. Louis shelter would accommodate victims from all over Missouri, he said. In Missouri, a person is considered a victim of a human trafficking if they are under 17 and have solicited sex, Bradley said.
“It’s not just in St. Louis,” Bradley said. “It’s your neighbor, your nieces, it can be anyone.”
Bradley said human trafficking is a problem in Missouri because it is a hub thanks to its location near the center of the country. Bradley said he was unsure how much human trafficking goes on in Cape Girardeau. There has been one reported case of soliciting prostitution in Cape Girardeau in the past year, according to police documents.

When a Joltran technician began disconnecting the phone, a familiar scenario ensued.
“A young lady came out and begged him not to take the phone out. She lived right across the street and said she had a sick child and this was her only communication with a doctor,” Nesselhauf said. “All of our techs can tell you heartbreaking stories like that, where people come out of their houses saying, ‘Please don’t take my phone away!’”
Nesselhauf wrote to the ward’s alderman, Matt Villa, seeking a reprieve for the phone.
Villa, who was an alderman from 1997 to this year, recalled the incident.
“I was sympathetic to Jim and to that woman,” he said. “But it was obvious to people in the area that the phone was being used to sell drugs and for prostitution.

… The president concluded that clemency was warranted for these individuals” – Obama also issued five pardons – “because they demonstrated genuine remorse for their crimes and remarkable rehabilitation into law-abiding, productive citizens and active members of their communities,” White House spokesman Matt Lehrich said.
Obama was no doubt aware of Jennings’ plight: Democratic Sen. Richard Durban of Illinois, Obama’s former partner in the Senate, had been aggressively pushing for her release for years.
Jennings’ story is as sad as it is compelling. She’s battling cancer, was beaten by a surrogate mother, surrounded by others who used drugs, left occasionally with a prostitute who sexually assaulted her, sexually abused by one of her half-brothers and had a stepfather who tried to rape her. Even the judge who put her in jail felt sorry for her.

The Royal Inn was also raided Aug. 11 by federal agents and East St. Louis officers. Drugs were found and four people were arrested, including the mother of a baby girl who was in the motel.
“This place has been in operation for over 10 years and has been a revolving door for drugs and prostitution,” said Joe Beliveau, Illinois State Police commander for the Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois.
The Working Against Violent Elements federal task force, which includes local, state and federal officers, gathered information for five months before the raid.
“If there’s illegal drugs and prostitution and anything else illegal going on, we need to get it out of the city and off the streets,” East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks Jr. said.

On November 2, 2011, Attorney General Greg Abbot released a statement that Mexico’s drug gangs and violence has become a major crime issue in Texas. In the state of Missouri, numerous gang related homicides, shooting incidents and arrests have been reported from St. Louis to Kansas City by authorities. The criminal activities attributed to St. Louis organized gangs has added to the title, the ”Most Violent City in America”.
Battles for “turf” neighborhoods and against rivals have been a known factor since the late 1950s. There are 85 police identified gangs in St. Louis which include the “Bloods” and “Crips” who originated in Los Angeles, California. Immigrants, legal and illegal from other countries comprise 14 independant street gangs.
48 per cent of crimes from assault, drug trafficking, extortion, home invasion robberies, intimidation to homicides are linked to these groups. Nationwide many gangs are involved with human trafficking and prostitution. St. Louis with 1.3 million residents is a consumer market, distribution center for cocaine, heroin, marijuana and meth. The St. Louis pipeline extends to other states including Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and destinations north. Narcotics are supplied by Mexican Drug Traffic Organizations operating in the border states.

Ghosts of movie stars and others who lost their jobs at the end of the silent film era are rumored to haunt the theater with the hope that they will scare away customers and close the theater. Other legends say the theater is haunted because of activity in the basement, where there was reportedly a brothel and/or someone was murdered.
The facts
Originally designed for silent films in 1926, the theater began showing films with sound, or “talkies,” starting with “The Jazz Singer” in 1927, according to Ron Onesti, president and CEO of the Arcada. He also said the Arcada was one of four theaters in the area to show talkie films that eventually killed the silent film industry.
While there’s not much evidence about a brothel, the Hotel Baker and the Arcada led downtown St. Charles to be considered “the cat’s meow” for locals in the ‘20s and the perfect place for a night out, according to St. Charles library documents. Tunnels beneath the downtown area that were once used for the Underground Railroad were also reportedly used for bootlegging at the time. The reports

… Nuts’ a good start to St. Louis Actors’ Studio’s new season
By Gerry Kowarsky Special to the Post-Dispatch STLtoday.com | Posted: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 12:00 am | Loading…
“Nuts” is a courtroom drama that takes place in real time. Even the recesses align with the play’s two intermissions.
The 1979 script by Tom Topor provides a good start for the new season at St. Louis Actors’ Studio.
The occasion for the play is a sanity hearing in the psychiatric wing of Bellevue Hospital. The defendant is Claudia Faith Draper, a high-priced call girl accused of murdering a client. It’s clear that something strange is going on when Claudia’s stepfather refuses to shake hands with her lawyer.
Claudia is at odds with her respectable, middle-class parents because she believes they are conspiring with the prosecution and her psychiatrist to have her declared unfit to stand trial. This ploy for avoiding publicity terrifies Claudia because she knows a psychiatric confinement can be extended indefinitely.
