KANSAS CITY > Woman gets 10-year sentence for sex trafficking • A central Missouri woman has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for taking part in a sex trafficking conspiracy in which a minor girl was sold into prostitution. The U.S. attorney’s office says Brandy Key, 40, of Columbia, won’t be eligible for parole under the sentence she received Monday in federal court. Key and Eric Gathings, 37, also of Columbia, pleaded guilty to sex trafficking charges in October. Prosecutors said Gathings admitted recruiting a homeless girl in 2009 and giving her a place to live while she sold herself for sex and gave him the earnings. Authorities said that while Gathings was in state custody on a weapons charge, Key continued to sell the girl for sex on his behalf. Gathings was scheduled for sentencing today.

Recipients of welfare, meanwhile, were treated brutally: there was a rule that families would lose their entitlements if there were a man in the home and one-parent families were thereby forcibly created. An adult recalls how, as a boy, he had to lie to inspectors when his father paid a visit. There were also bans on owning televisions and telephones. The attitude, says an ex-resident, was “we’re giving you money so we control you”. For another the effect was to “make people feel isolated and restricted”. Their treatment was “void of humanity caring, like a prison environment”. The “mindset for inhabitants was that they weren’t cared about”.
And so the place fell to pieces, despite the heroism of many of its residents. Vandal-proof fixtures were installed, but “the fact that it was indestructible made you want to destroy it”. There were “bitter people, angry people” who would attack emergency vehicles, because “they wanted to make a statement”. Drugs, prostitution and shootings took over. A rent strike by residents brought some concessions from the authorities, but it was a short-lived victory. Not long after, they were ejected, and the blocks destroyed.

New Idea has even given Will’s sniper a name, ”Lone Wolf”, and said he is an Argentinian gunning for the young royal to avenge ”national humiliation or personal loss” during the Falklands war. We’re sure Will, who regularly travels with a few dozen SAS deathbots by his side and has a brother who was last week handed the keys to an Apache attack helicopter, is taking this all as seriously as he should, i.e. not very.
Still, it makes a change from the other recurring theme of the week, Channel Seven’s reality series My Kitchen Rules, which has somehow managed to pop up everywhere.
”I’m having a baby!” reveals Princess What’s-her-name, the one everyone was supposed to hate, in New Idea. ”Someone might possibly be cheating,” says the other ”Princess”, the lawyer named Peter in Woman’s Day (and that title was theirs, not ours, Pete).
Over in Who, one of the soldiers has vowed to care for his son and OK has the (insert sarcasm here) sensitive statement from Jillian that her soon-to-be daughter-in-law ”could have ended up a prostitute or a druggie”. Could be worse Jill, she could have been ”goofed up” on sugar. Whatever that means.

Federal authorities say the Kansas City, Mo., area prosecutes more human trafficking cases than anywhere in the U.S., and scrutiny is growing in St. Louis. Traffickers like the fact that St. Louis is located at the intersection of several interstates, making it a convenient stopover when sporting events or conventions are in or near the city.
Nix event planner Kimberly Ritter, 42, first learned about the serious problem of trafficking of minors when a client, the U.S. Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, told her they would only book a hotel with a human trafficking code of ethics.
Through research, Ritter learned that organized sex trafficking is both a domestic and international problem. She learned the age of teenage prostitutes is dropping _ the preferred age now is 14. And she learned that pimps are now targeting vulnerable suburban and rural kids, not just urban runaways and homeless youths.

What’s she’s found, Ritter says, isn’t just evidence of prostitution but evidence that children as young as 12 are being sex-trafficked by pimps in the same hotels she’s been booking for her clients.
In St. Louis, she’s identified a dozen hotels where such photos have been taken.
“We live in this beautiful bubble here in St. Louis, and people think it doesn’t happen here, but it does,” Ritter said.
Federal law enforcement agrees. A 2006 U.S. Department of Justice Report identified St. Louis as one of the nation’s intensive hubs for human trafficking. Although some of those cases involve forced domestic labor of illegal immigrants, a federal prosecutor said the bulk of them involve minors and younger adults being pimped for sex.

EAST POINT, GA (WIS) – The mother of an 18-month-old boy who hasn’t been since before Thanksgiving was arrested for prostitution in the Atlanta-area two weeks before the toddler went missing.
On November 9, 22-year-old Zinah Jennings agreed to have sex with an undercover police officer in East Point, Ga, according to a police report.
Police were conducting a special operation around 5:30 p.m. when they saw Jennings walking on the side of the street. Agents said it appeared Jennings was trying to get the attention of “every passing motorist.”
When undercover officers approached her, according to the report, Jennings was asked if she was working and she said “yes.” She was then how much she would charge for sex and she responded by agreeing to $40.00.
…
She was charged with solicitation of prostitution and simple possession of marijuana.
