He had left home early that summer morning, crossing Dorchester to pick up his 4-year-old son and take him on a 3-mile bus ride to preschool, then returned home alone to get ready for this.

ALTON – An auctioneer’s gavel Thursday sounded the end of College Crest Motel, a troubled operation launched as a family-owned business and closed under court order after falling to drug dealers, users and prostitutes.
It took just a few minutes to sell the storied property to Dan Hornsey of Alton for $32,500, plus 10 percent buyer’s premium, totaling $35,750.
Hornsey said he is not sure what he will do with the property at 1809 Burling Drive, once he closes on its purchase.

Randles was asked if those conservative Christian voters in southwest Missouri might stay home or even vote for Governor Nixon — if faced with a choice between Nixon and Kinder.
“I do think that’s a factor that has to be considered, of course,” Randles said, “I personally have never heard anyone say anything bad about Jay Nixon’s personal life. I would be surprised to hear anything negative.”
KMOX contacted the Kinder campaign for comment on Randle’s candidacy. A Kinder spokesman declined to comment. Kinder has yet to formally announce his run for office. But his campaign received two big boosts last week — a fundraiser with Karl Rove in Cape Girardeau that reportedly brought in $160,000, and an endorsement Friday from former U-S Senator Jack Danforth, who told KMOX’s Charlie Brennan that he’s “all for” Kinder.
Danforth, an ordained Episcopalian minister, down played the stripper scandal, saying “few of us are saints.”

LOUIS > Dispute over fundraising event is settled • The Nursery Foundation of St. Louis and the Greater St. Louis Book Fair, which serves as the annual fundraiser for the nursery, announced this week they have “amicably resolved” a lawsuit over the way net proceeds of the fair have been calculated. The nursery alleged in the suit that it was damaged by a shortfall of at least $335,000. It also sought the name and rights to operate the fundraiser. An attorney for the nursery who provided the joint statement would only say the groups will continue as separate but cooperating organizations. The nursery, 1916 North Euclid Avenue, opened in 1947 as the city’s first multiracial day care for children. The fair became its own nonprofit organization in 2000 with the agreement to partially fund the nursery, which serves disadvantaged kids.

ST. LOUIS • Maurice Dontae Alexander, 25, was sentenced in federal court here Friday to six years in prison Friday for prostituting a 16-year-old runaway.
Alexander and Latoshia Norris, 25, both of Minneapolis, took the girl in, fed and clothed her and trained her in prostitution, according to authorities. They placed ads on a website, Backpage.com, and traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, the Kansas City area and Indianapolis to meet customers.
The FBI tracked them to this area and arrested Alexander and Norris at a hotel.
Norris is scheduled to be sentenced later this month. Each pleaded guilty in June of enticement to engage in prostitution.

A Minneapolis man has been sentenced to six years in prison for involving a 16-year-old girl in prostitution.
A federal judge in St. Louis on Friday issued the sentence for 25-year-old Maurice Alexander. A second person convicted in the crime, 25-year-old Latoshia Norris, also of Minneapolis, faces sentencing later this month. Both pleaded guilty in June to one felony count of enticement to engage in prostitution.
Federal prosecutors say Alexander and Norris took the girl to various cities for prostitution. The girl eventually moved to St. Louis.

Alton meets Alicia Keys
A LUSAKA entreprenuer who met Alicia Keys in the current series of MTV Base meets…with MTN says he learnt a lot from the award-winning musician.
Alton Ford, 25 was one of six young Africans and MTV Base VJ Dhlomo who met the R & B legend in New York City last month for a two-hour long discussion that touched on female empowerment, HIV and AIDS, motherhood, music, the importance of education and Keys’ difficult childhood that involved growing up surrounded by prostitution and drug abuse.
The Rhodes Park resident, who won the all-expenses-paid trip after participating online in the Pan-African MTV Base Meets…With MTN contest, described Keys as knowledgeable and down to earth.
“I learnt a lot. She’s very talented. She’s very ordinary actually. We met her as a group. After the two-hour meeting she left; she had another appointment. It was a long interview,” said Ford.
