Anti-crime measures effective at Arnold hotel
By Kevin Carbery STLtoday.com | Posted: Friday, July 29, 2011 7:30 am | Loading…
Measures taken to discourage criminal activity at an Arnold extended-stay hotel appear to be working, city and company spokesmen are saying.
Arnold and Value Place officials met April 4 after city leaders became concerned about the number and seriousness of police calls over incidents at the hotel at 888 Arnold Commons Drive. Arnold officials said they were considering pulling the national chain’s business license at that time.
The Arnold Police Department had responded to the hotel for reports of rape, theft, prostitution, suicides, drug sales, drug use and methamphetamine production, a department spokesman said.
The spring meeting led to an agreement calling for Value Place to hire off-duty Arnold police officers to patrol the premises 24 hours a day, beef up security checks of potential guests and raise its weekly rates.

ALTON – A community volunteer continued her effort Thursday to rally citizens’ interest in building a youth center and free clinic in the inner-Alton Mexico neighborhood.
“I am trying to get a group of people and create a culture of caring,” Linda Price of the Mexico Village People organization said during a meeting at Hillcrest Apartments, 1710 Muny Vista Drive. “Within our community, we have to create a culture of caring.”
She calls the effort to bring a center to property her family owns north of Hellrung Park, at Union and Gold streets, Project Greater Good. She also said she would like to begin a Street Camp to familiarize youth with their Mexico neighborhood, perhaps pick up litter and hear speakers who recovered from drug abuse or are former prostitutes.

Strip club entertainer sues First Amendment
7/27/2011 4:00 PM By Kelly Holleran
A Smithton woman claims the owners of an adult club failed to protect her from being cut with a knife while she was working there.
Ann Mollett filed a lawsuit July 14 in Madison County Circuit Court against First Amendment.
In her complaint, Mollett claims she worked as an entertainer for First Amendment, which operates Wise Guys in Washington Park. She claims that on Aug. 28, 2009, several of her fellow entertainers beat, attacked and humiliated her. During the attack, Mollett was cut with a knife, the complaint states.
Because of the incident, Mollett sustained severe injuries, was hindered from attending to her normal duties and lost the value of her time, the suit states. In addition, she suffered great pain and anguish, the complaint says.

LETTER: ‘Sagging pants’ ban is misguided, racist
I am writing this note in reference to the approval of the ordinance against sagging pants in Collinsville.
Sagging pants is no more a “gang-related” fad than scantily clad women on the sidewalk is a prostitution-related fad. Overweight, hairy, sweaty men can run-walk-bike the streets of Collinsville without monetary injury. In fact, these same people with ’sagging pants” can walk around shirtless without legal consequence.
This is nothing less than a racist policy and it is embarrassing to live in a county where this has passed.
Are police officers actually supposed to spend time on this crap? Are parents going to be forced to pay this fine when their kids are ticketed for it?
Do our policy leaders really have nothing more important to do?

Q: How do people find out who the dealers are?
A: Word of mouth. Users tell each other about who’s selling the best quality stuff.
Q: Is there one big criminal organization that handles drug sales in St. Louis?
A: No, it’s sold by small groups. It’s not terribly organized. The dealers on the street level handle small quantities, which are easy to hide.
Q: How much crime is committed by drug users?
A: A lot. Shoplifting is huge. Addicts are forever getting caught by store security. These users are supporting a drug habit and will sell anything to buy drugs. Drug addicts steal a lot of copper pipes from vacant houses. They’ll turn to armed robbery and prostitution. No matter how dangerous it is. Their addiction is that strong.

A St. Louis-area financial investment handler was sentenced Friday to eight years in federal prison and ordered to repay more than $4.3 million to often-elderly clients he bilked of money he spent on such things as trips to strip clubs in neighboring Illinois, jewelry and credit card bills.
Joshua Gould, 32, of University City, pleaded guilty in April along with David Rubin, 47, to federal wire-fraud counts alleging they embezzled about $1.5 million from a retired couple.
…
Prosecutors say Rubin transferred the balance of those funds to Gould, who used the money for personal use on his car, mortgages, credit cards, a renovation of his home, jewelry and trips “including substantial expenses” at strip clubs in St. Louis’ Illinois suburbs. Gould also funneled the money to cover startup and operational costs of various business ventures.

ST. LOUIS • Joshua Gould stole the bulk of his mother’s inheritance – roughly $500,000.
He stole from widows. He stole from religious organizations. And he stole from the elderly. Many lost their life savings.
Gould used some of the money to pay other investors in a mini-Ponzi scheme. He used some to start several businesses. He used some for charitable contributions to bolster his reputation.
And he used some for his own personal use. He paid credit cards bills, renovated his home and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on strippers – paying them at Metro East clubs, partying with them in St. Louis hotels and paying rent for at least one woman, prosecutors said.
