Ferguson’s lawyer, Jon Haddow, said in a telephone interview that he talked with Ferguson about two weeks ago about him writing letters of apology.
The letters were part of counseling he has been receiving in jail, specifically in analyzing and acknowledging his conduct and its impact on the bank employees, Haddow said.
“I know he was planning to do that. It was his plan to send out some apologies, particularly to the bank employees,” Haddow said.
Ferguson’s robbery spree began April 9 in Buffalo, N.Y., and ended July 14 with his arrest at a motel in Bangor, Maine., the morning after he held up the Bangor Savings Bank in Orono, federal authorities say.
Prosecutors say Ferguson spent much of the $100,000 he stole at strip clubs and restaurants and on sports memorabilia.

In the past, Ferguson’s instinctive reaction following an injury was to thrust Rooney back into the fray as quickly as possible. A new kind of adult entertainment will be opening in the St. Louis area on Friday.
The Wildwood 10 cinemas will feature the largest screen in town — 56 feet wide — and two of its screens will be for 21-and-over only. The art-deco multiplex is operated by B&B Theatres of Kansas City, making its first entry into St. Louis. This is the biggest and most technologically advanced of the B&B operations, with projectors that require no human operator, and Dolby 7.1 surround-sound technology, which includes speakers in the ceiling.
