Sheree Murphy Charged Again With Murder, Arson

RIVERDALE, Ga. — The woman who prosecutors say set a fire that killed five members of a family entered a not guilty plea Friday.
Prosecutors say Sheree “Queen” Dionne Murphy was a prostitute who used crack cocaine when she set fire to a mattress at the Riverdale Budget Inn on June 7, 2007. She was angry at her drug dealer who lived at the motel, according to prosecutors.
Killed in the fire were Shakita Jones, 32; Jones’s uncle, Melvin Jones, 43; Jones’s fiance, Freddy Colston, Jr., 27; and two of Jones’s children, Devon Butler, 12, and Desha Butler, 10. Firefighters said they found the victims crouched in their shower with the water running.

Prosecutors say Sheree “Queen” Dionne Murphy, then a prostitute and a drug user, poured a flammable liquid on pile of mattresses and box springs and set fire to them because she was angry with her drug dealer, who lived at the Budget Inn in Riverdale.
Five people, including two children, died in the June 7, 2007, blaze at the 40-unit motel that police considered a nuisance because of criminal activity. Three others were injured along with seven firefighters.
The prosecution is seeking the death penalty for the deaths of Melvin Jones, 43; his 32-year-old niece, Shakita Jones; Shakita’s two children, 12-year-old Devon Butler and 10-year-old Desha Butler; and Shakita Jones’ fiance, Freddy Colston, 27.

Frey conceded that Murphy used drugs, was a prostitute and was homeless at the time of the fire. He said Murphy had lived at the motel at one time.

Madam ‘low’ for exploiting girl prostitute, mom says

THE mother of a teenager who sold her body for sex confronted the 52-year-old madam who took her daughter’s money.
Peggy Doreen Melquist pleaded guilty this week to charges of living off the avails of prostitution and running a common bawdy house.
Court of Queen’s Bench Judge Robert Dewar accepted a joint recommendation from Crown prosecutor Mark Kantor and defence lawyer Gerri Wiebe for a plea bargain after the teen involved in the case died.
The girl cannot be identified.
Melquist owned an inner-city house where the girl crashed after she regularly fled a Child and Family Services group home.

As part of the plea bargain, charges against Melquist for a second count of living off the avails of prostitution and procuring were dropped.
